Date May 4th in the Gregorian calendar
Way of celebration The day is not celebrated in the strictest sense, although many academics and intellectuals write essays on this day to commemorate the spirit of May 4th and Youth Day.
Origin
This day commemorates the first mass student movement in 1919. This movement was motivated by a desire to change things after the Chinese government of the time surrendered the province of Shandong to Japanese colonizers. The movement was anti-Confucius, and promoted the democratic and scientific ideals of western countries. The influence of this movement can be seen in the many government organized youth groups that are popular all around the country today.
