| Origin |
| The history of International Women's Day is a history of taking action against prejudice and discrimination. It started in 1908 when female garment makers in New York demonstrated to demand improved working conditions. They had to work in horrible conditions and were paid half of the men's wages, with many dying early from poor health. Women also had no right to vote, but due to these original demonstrations a day for women was set up in 1910 by an international conference of women from around the world. Since that day, International Women's day has been a permanent fixture on March 8th. The day is one with universal appeal, especially in a country with socialist leanings such as China. The day has marked many demonstrations and marches since, including a 1928 rally in Sydney, Australia to call for equal pay and equal work for all workers, no matter what their gender. Of course, much has improved since then, but there is still some way to go before women are treated equally around the world. This day gives us the opportunity to remember how far we have come, but also how much we still have to fight for. |
