The Beijing subway construction project began on July 1, 1965. Initially the product was a subway line 23.6 kilometers in length, with seventeen stops. On October 1, 1969, the subway was operational and began trials on January 15, 1971. The subway line was extended three times before official subway operations began on September 15, 1981. Up until the year 2006, operational routes included the 1, 2, and 13 subway lines, as well as the BaTong line, all in all 114 kilometers of operational track and 70 operational subway stations. Amongst them, the 1 line has 31.04 kilometers of track and 23 stations; the 2 line has 23.61 kilometers of track and 18 stations; the 13 lines has 40.85 kilometers of track and 16 stations; and the BaTong line has 18.9 kilometers of track and 13 stations. Passenger traffic at present has reached 1.5 million people altogether.  [ more ]

Shanghai Subway LogoShanghai Subway:

The Shanghai subway system is one of the youngest and among the most rapidly expanding in the world. The first line opened in 1995 on a north-south axis from Shanghai’s Central Station to the southern suburbs; the first section of the second line followed only four years later.

A third line, the so-called "Pearl Line," has been developed out of a former, mostly elevated ring-railway and runs from Baoshan Steel Complex in the north via Shanghai Railway Station to Caoxi Road in the south. Construction between Caoxi Road and Jiang Wan Zhen of the first 25 kilometer section – with 19 stations, 3 at grade – was completed in May 2000 and opened December 26, 2000 for trial operation.   [ more ]

Guangzhou Subway LogoGuangzhou Subway:

The Chinese city of Guangzhou (formerly known as Canton) is the capital of Guangdong Province and has seven million inhabitants. It is situated in the south of the country near Hong Kong. Construction of a subway network was approved in 1989 and construction started in 1993.

Line 1 was inaugurated on June 28, 1999. It was built as a turn-key project by a consortium led by Siemens and has a total length of 18.5 kilometers with 16 stations. Apart from Keng Kou and Xi Lang, all stations are underground. 21 air-conditioned 6-car-trains were supplied by Adtranz. They operate in ATO-mode. The metro runs at an average speed of 36 km/h. A trip along the entire route takes 32 minutes.   [ more ]
