Chinese Savvy Forums
The Chinese love animals. Animals are a massive part of Chinese culture, with everyone having an animal sign representing the year of their birth. Chinese poets write about animals, and artists paint them as being in harmonious company with human beings. The Chinese also take advantage of their animal resources in other ways, such as sending Chinese giant pandas as gifts to friendly nations, and the use of animal parts in their traditional medicine. Items like tiger bone drink (虎骨酒), and ginseng-antler drink(人参鹿茸酒), were once very popular, although are seen as cruel or illegal nowadays.

Despite their love for animals, the last few decades have seen untold damage to animal species throughout the country. This is mainly due to China 's remarkable economic development, with the ongoing process of industrialization and urbanization threatening to deprive many animal species of their habitats. Combined with a lack of effective protection through state laws and regulations, rare animals are further endangered due to aggressive hunting – again mainly driven by economic interests. However, some things are being done to change the situation. For instance, take the recent case of the bid to rescue the Tibetan antelope from endangerment and extinction.

Good fortune seems to come in the form of fuwa (福娃), the official mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Having made one of the mascots, Yingying (迎迎) in the image of the Tibetan antelope, China is starting to take better care of this selected national symbol. But what does the future hold for the other endangered species in China ?
