The Chinese love number 10. They see it as a sign of beauty, hence the phrase十全十美 (shí quán shí měi), which literally means as perfect and complete as number 10.
In its October 2005 issue, the Chinese National Geography (中国国家地理) magazine featured China's Most Beautiful Places. These places were selected by a national panel consisting of more than 100 Chinese academics and experts (People's Daily Online). Everyone from freelance photographers, geographers, environmentalists, the media, and even the internet users, were invited to select China's most beautiful 'tens'. The sites were sorted into fifteen categories, including the most beautiful mountains, canyons, caves, islands, coastlines, deserts, cities, villages, waterfalls, forests, prairies, glaciers and wetlands. According to the CNG magazine, all winners were selected according to standards of naturalness, beauty, variety of species and uniqueness of culture.
