The Chinese consider themselves the descendents of the dragon. They love dragons and portray them as magical animals with mysterious power over the world, able to transform themselves into thousands of forms. Educated or illiterate, people worship the dragon and celebrate it everywhere: in shows, craftworks, or even a simple piece of calligraphy featuring the Chinese dragon character. Below are 18 pieces of calligraphy work that feature 龙, or 龍 in its traditional form. The calligraphers featured here include artists of both old and modern times, the Chinese emperors, and Mao Zedong himself.
