(Youth Hostels)

In 1912, the world's first youth hostel was established in an abandoned ancient fortress, Altena, in Germany. Since its inception, the youth hostel has become an accepted institution the world over, providing refuge for backpackers and travelers from every part of the globe. Nowadays, hostels have become the most popular choice for overseas travelers in China, not only because of their safety, economy, and cleanliness, but also because of their ever-growing relationship with Chinese touring groups. Youth hostels can go by many names: "qīng nián lǚ guǎn," "qīng nián jiǔ diàn," "qīng nián bīn guǎn," etc. If you see signs with any of those words on it, you can be assured a nice, safe place to stay. Even though their signs do not all necessarily say "qīng nián lǚ shě," all "youth accommodations" generally have the same facilities and the same setup, though some may be bigger or have special facilities that others do not.
