(I Love Xicheng, Protect Our Environment)

Xicheng is one of Beijing's eight districts. Beijing's eight districts are comprised of four original inner city districts: Dongcheng (in the northeast – originally the eastern half of the inner city), Xicheng (in the west – originally the western half of the inner city), Chongwen (in the southeast – originally the eastern part of Beijing's outer section), and Xuanwu (in the southwest – originally the western part of Beijing's outer section). The remaining districts, all located in outer Beijing, are: Chaoyang, Fengtai, Haidian, and Shijingshan. These eight districts constitute modern day Beijing City.

In the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), there was a saying: "dōng fù xī guì nán jiàn běi pín" (the East and West of Beijing are affluent and pricy; while the North and South are cheap, poor, and impoverished). "Dōng fù," the affluence of the Beijing’s eastern district, may be attributable to the many warehouses used for storing precious and scarce resources, situated in that region during that time. For example, today, one of the most famous spots in Dongcheng is Jingshan Park. In the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), that area was rich in coal depositories. "Xī guì" (rich west) is derived from the fact that Xicheng used to house many government officials. The reasoning behind "nán jiàn" (lowly or cheap South) is that, at that time, the southern areas of Beijing were populated by the Hàn, a people who were looked down upon by the ruler of the day. The northern part of Beijing was referred to as "běi pín" (impoverished North) mostly because the North, at that time, was so remote and so far from the populated areas of the city with stifled and inconvenient transportation and communication. People who came to live out were mostly wealthy men who were content to sit on their laurels and live out the rest of the days in an unproductive manner.

Nowadays, this saying no longer holds. Each district currently expends great efforts to seek out new development. In Haidian, there is the new Silicon Valley, Zhōngguāncūn; Chaoyang has the CBD (Chaoyang Business District) economic centre; Xicheng has the Xidan commercial and financial streets; Dongcheng has Wangfujing (an upscale shopping and tourist district); and each of the remaining districts, not to be left behind, are establishing their own special characteristics and landmarks.
