Popular Word"和谐"(Harmonious)

 

        邓主席搞过严打，江主席搞过精神文明建设，胡主席在搞和谐社会, 自从胡锦涛主席“构建和谐社会”这一理论提出以来,”和谐社会”这个词不仅被加入词典,就连”和谐”一词都变得格外流行。这是两幅老北京四合院大门的图片，新一点的是仿古的新建筑，在门两旁还立有门墩，门上有四个圆柱上写有“和谐平安”四个字，从门上圆柱的多少可以看出院主人的地位高低，一般为双数，越多表示地位越高。旧一点的院门看样子已经有年头了，上面也有两个圆柱，地位较低，从红色的春联上我们也可以找到“安定和谐”的“和谐”二字。

 


 

        Chinese leaders Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin were engaged in the promotion of cultural and ideological progress and the development of socialist culture and ethics. Hu Jintao was focused on the promotion of a harmonious society. Since the Hu advanced his "Building of a Harmonious Society" theory, the phrase "harmonious society" (和谐社会) has not only been adopted into the Chinese language reference books, but has also become quite popular in the vernacular.

        Below is a picture of the main gate of a Sì Hé Yuàn – a compound of four houses surrounding a courtyard. The newer communities are constructed in newer styles and designs. On either side of the main entrance, there are stone mounds carved into shapes. Above the door are four cylinders inscribed with the characters "Hé Xié Píng Ān" – meaning "harmonious and safe." From the number of cylinders above the door, one can gauge the relative status of the households of the Sì Hé Yuàn. They ordinarily come in even numbers, the more cylinders, the higher the status.

        It seems as though the older gates are quite worn and show their years. In the picture of the older entryway, one can see that there are still two cylinders on the door frame, indicating a relatively low status. From the red Spring Festival sign strung above the door, we can also derive the "Ān Dìng Hé Xié” – “stable and harmonious" phrase that has become so popular.
