(Sex Shop)
Peeking out amongst the markets, restaurants, and business venues of China's biggest cities are small shops with signs that firmly but respectfully declare, "成人保健." These stores sell "adult goods" of a sexual nature, a subject long taboo in the Chinese culture. Like in some Western nations, only those over the age of eighteen are allowed entry, but – according to my Chinese friends – the cultural limitations go even a step beyond that. There is still a strong negative stigma associated with entering one of these shops and most are too embarrassed to do more than joke about what they might see inside. It seems that some Western parents (not all, but some) are much more open about discussing what it is that their children are being barred from viewing – not granting their children entry, of course, but merely quenching their children's curiosity. However, information becoming increasingly essential for sexual health and safety as it is, the dissemination in China of the basics regarding what lay behind the doors of these shops is becoming more crucial and widespread.
