(White Signs & Green Signs)

One of the easiest ways to orient oneself when navigating through Beijing is with the use of street signs. To many, it may be daunting – especially those without much experience reading characters or knowledge of pinyin. However, there are several easy ways to figure out where you are and where you should go. The first is the color of the sign. White signs indicate that the road is an east-west thoroughfare, while green signs indicate a north-south road. Also, some signs include words such as xi1, dong1, bei3, nan2, and zhong1. This is especially true on large roads (including the second-fifth ring roads) as well as other major boulevards. For example, Beichen Lu, as seen on the green sign below, is actually split into Beichen DongLu (Beichen East Road) and Beichen XiLu (Beichen West Road). This would tell you which Beichen Lu you are on, as large roads are often split.
