In the West, we are extremely familiar with the Colonel of KFC and the golden arches of McDonald's. And many will say, "Why fly thousands of miles if you're just going to eat American junk food?" To that I will say a few things:
        1) The quality is different. Though KFC, McDonalds and YongHe DaWang are all "fast food" chains and certainly less healthy than home-cooking, the health value quality of the foods here is considerably higher than in its North American and even European counterparts. Portions are more appropriate; "extras" (such as cheese, added meat, sauces, or dressings) are kept to a minimum; the menu has more variety.
        2) While I would recommend eating Chinese cuisine in China, it is not for everyone and after you’ve been here a while, variety becomes your friend. An occasional indulgence in American-style fast food is not so bad. Neither is giving Chinese fast food a try (and no, it's nothing like it is in the West!)
        3) The Chinese treat these places the way they should be treated: as a place to occasionally visit, not munch at every day. This is not to generalize of course that there are no Chinese who eat regularly at fast-food joints. But the majority of the Chinese I have met regard McDonald's and KFC as a place they will treat themselves to once in a while, or indulge in when they are too tired to cook – not as the sole bearer of their nutritional intake.
So, don't be afraid to give Chinese fast food a try. You might be surprised to see more meat than bread and lettuce and tomato added that actually look, respectively, green and red!
